FAQ:

• Why did the default display sequence number changed from 0 to 1 (or something else)?

The choice of DISPLAY chosen by the X Server on startup depends on the presence of .X lock files in /tmp/.X11-unix (the script starts at a value of 0, if it finds a .X0 file then this number increments until a "free" display number is found, this number is then used). The .X11-unix folder which should be empty (provided the X Server is off) in usual operation. Remove those files if necessary (except the one from the current running xserver).
