Adapted from aegis:
A random $10 wired headset will outperform a Macbook’s built-in microphone.
If you need a better mic and you’re ready to invest, the Blue Yeti is a no-brainer for around $100 - it’s simple because it’s a single USB plug and just works and is about as high quality as you’ll get. After the Yeti the only mic recommendations I have are for situations with high background noise.
With high background noise you should look into the Stenomask (~$250) or DPA d:fine Cardioid (which will set you back $700-1300 depending on the audio interface you get, but afaik there is no better mic available period, it has been confirmed to work with good accuracy on planes/trains/at a 120 decibel dance party).
