Sound Stone Graphics
The Sound Stone graphics are all split into several icons, each one with a corresponding 4bpp subpalette (16 colours).
There are a total of 6 subpalettes in the image that can be used, from which the very first (Subpalette 0) is used for the grayed-out icons on the top, but the coloured icons each have a specific subpalette which is sometimes shared with other subpalettes. The only icon to not share a subpalette is the icon for the Fire Spring (and its orbs).
Let's take the original image as an example:
In here we see that the top half of the image is all using a similar gray palette with green text. This is subpalette 0, which is the very first subpalette indexed in the list. However, the rest of the icons all use the subpalettes in different orders, so for the rest of the graphics, take the following image as an example of how they are ordered:
In this image we can see exactly which subpalette corresponds to which icon from the Sound Stone graphics, with the corresponding number over each icon matching that of the subpalette rows on the right of the image. Let's describe exactly what icons match with what subpalette for clarification:
- Subpalette 0: The top half of the image, all of the gray icons
- Subpalette 1: Giant Step and Pink Cloud (alongside their blue and light-orange orbs below them)
- Subpalette 2: Magnet Hill, Lumine Hall and Rainy Circle (alongside their corresponding orbs below)
- Subpalette 3: Fire Spring and its orbs
- Subpalette 4: Lilliput Steps and Milky Well (alongside their corresponding orbs below)
- Subpalette 5: Exclusive for the big center orb and the squared corners
As an additional example, let's take a similar example from the Mother Remake hack, which uses different graphics for all the icons, alongside new orb colours and even a modified center orb as well:
This should hopefully help clear out any confusion regarding the icons and what palettes correspond to each one of them, so hackers can make full use of the graphics found within the Sound Stone to their liking.
