RailsGirls Summer of Code

Shot 1

  • bean bag, outside

Student: Hi everyone, my name’s XYZ, I’m a RailsGirls student, and I’m here to tell you about RailsGirls Summer of Code.

1.1

So, who here thinks more women should be involved in Open Source?

1.2

RailsGirls certainly does and Summer of Code is our initiative to help women do just that.

1.3

Rails Girls provides opportunities for women to attend free workshops and gain a small insight into the basics of Ruby on Rails. The Summer of Code will be a chance for Rails Girls students to extend their skills and to keep on coding!

2.1

Mentor: Rails Girls Summer of Code will see RailsGirls students work on real life open source projects, supported by coaches and mentors.

2.2

Just like Google Summer of Code, our Students will work full time for three months, and be paid, so that they can focus fully on their project, and make a meaningful contribution to its development.

Coach: Unlike those other summer of code programs we will have an additional role: We will find coaches who ideally can sit next to the student and give support motivation and encouragement.

3.2

So, mentors are domain experts for their projects. Coaches help students learnand achieve their goals.

[Interlude]

1.4

Student: Doesn't this sound like an awesome idea? We will make this happen!

2.3

Mentor: So what kind of projects are we looking for?

2.4

We are already talking to Rails, Rubinius, Sinatra, and Shoes, which we're really excited about. Our aim is to make at least one RailsGirls student a Rails contributor; at least one student a Rubinius contributor; at least one a Sinatra contributor; and so on...

2.5

Mentor: We hope there will be many more great projects that RailsGirls students can contribute to, and which will help women get started in open source.

[Call to action]

2.6

Mentor: And for this we need your help! If you are involved in a great Open Source project and you have an idea for a task that a Ruby newcomer could achieve in a few months, then please get in touch with us!

If your company cares about bringing more women into programming and creating more diversity in the work place, Rails Girls SOC could be a great sponsoring opportunity for you.
