This texture is used to decide how the model will be shaded, pretty much is what gives the toon look to a model, but also works fairly nice with gradient textures, to give a smoother shade.
Ramps can be both horizzontal (left to right) and vertical (down to up), so you can use that toon ramp you found between the textures of your new mmd model you just converted in blender right now.
Comes with a color parameter if you want to have colored shadows.
Since 2.0 for normal and expert inspector levels there's also an additional button that opens a gradient editor that gives you the ability to generate a custom toon ramp and preview the gradient changes in realtime.
