Forced expiratory volume (FEV1) is the amount of air you can exhale with force in 1 second. Spirometry is a diagnostic test that provides different measures of lung capacity. Often used to diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) or asthma, spirometry results are also used to see if your breathing has improved after treatment for a lung condition. Forced expiratory volume (FEV1) is a type of spirometry measurement. 1

The maximum amount of air your lungs can hold — your total lung capacity — is about 6 liters. 1
Given that, 6 liters would seem like an appropriate upper bound. However, studies have shown that athletes on average
have higher FEV1 values that non-athletes 2, 3, and can approach 7 liters.
While an upper bound of 7 would be most accurate, we choose 9 to allow for slightly larger values than 7 without being unrealistic.
A two digit number, like 10 or 25, might suggest a missing decimal (1.0 or 2.5) or incorrect unit of meaurement.
Given that humans need air to live, a non-zero value of 0.1 for a lower bound seems reasonable.
