In video game terminology, non-playable characters (NPCs) are generally recognized as entities that players cannot control. These include individuals like cashiers, helpful moles, and talking stones. However, within EarthBound’s engine, NPCs extend far beyond just characters. They encompass a wide range of interactive elements in the world, such as ATMs, telephones, food stands, boats, and more.

Moreover, there are ambient NPCs that exist purely for decorative purposes, contributing to the environment but lacking interactive dialogue—examples include clouds, lampposts, and traffic lights. Essentially, if you need an object that requires animation or movement, or if you need a character to be physically present or interact within the world for a period of time, you’ll want to utilize NPCs. In EarthBound, any form of interaction drives the progression of events, making NPCs essential for creating a dynamic, engaging world.
